It’s an ‘only in Hollywood’ scenario.
The Room was a modern-day Plan 9 From Outer Space with Tommy Wiseau filling the shoes of Ed Wood, notoriously Hollywood’s worst director. With The Room, Wiseau inadvertently created one of the worst movies of all time but also one of the biggest cult hits ever. From bizarre camera choices, extra long and unnecessary scenes and a lead performance from Wiseau himself that truly needs to be seen to be believed (“Oh hai, Mark”) it was always one of those stories that, if in the right hands, could make a brilliant movie. Think Tim Burton making Ed Wood with Johnny Depp into a movie classic and earning Martin Landau an Oscar in the process.
Using The Room co-star Greg Sestero’s best-selling tell-all about the making of Tommy Wiseau’s cult-classic, James Franco has directed potentially a new cult-classic himself. A hit at the Toronto International Film Festival and picked up by A24 for an awards season release (12/1 – limited, 12/8 – wide), The Disaster Artist is poised to crash the Oscar race in the best and most ironic way possible.
The film stars Franco as Wiseau (and Wiseau appears in a contractually obligated cameo) and features a huge, all-star cast that includes Seth Rogan, Dave Franco, Josh Hutcherson, Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Bryan Cranston, Dylan Minnette, Megan Mullally, Sharon Stone, Adam Scott, Judd Apatow, Kristen Bell, Melanie Griffith and more, many as cameos as themselves.
