‘The Shape of Water’ is the 2018 Producers Guild of America (PGA) Motion Picture Winner

The Shape of Water has won the 2018 Producers Guild of America award for Motion Pictures with Guillermo del Toro, J. Miles Dale as its winning pair.

This was a very competitive win with a tough match again Golden Globe winners Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Lady Bird as well as the small-budgeted blockbuster hit Get Out. The Shape of Water won the Critics’ Choice award last week but is the only film of these four not nominated for the Screen Actors Guild’s top prize tomorrow night. The PGA used to be quite a good prognosticator for the Best Picture Oscar but the two have not matched up the last for the last two years. The Big Short and La La Land won the PGA but the Oscar ended up going to Spotlight and Moonlight. While many think Guillermo del Toro can win at the DGA, without that SAG nomination Oscar’s Best Picture could still be up for grabs.

Coco won the Animated Feature prize, as expected. Eight of the last 12 winners here have gone on to win the Oscar.

Black Mirror became the first winner in the Longform Television category from a streaming network (Netflix). Fargo had won this award for the last two years. The Voice won Competition for the 5th year in a row. The only other winner has been The Amazing Race, the first year of the award. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won the Live Entertainment/Talk Television award for the third year in a row, the most wins in this category.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel picked the Comedy prize, its third in this short year. It won the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice for Best Comedy last week. The Handmaid’s Tale won Drama, continuing its streak of wins that started at the Emmys in September with Best Drama Series and followed up with wins at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice.
