Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has won the Screen Actors Guild Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture, positioning itself for Best Picture glory in just six weeks. The film also won Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell, who adds the trophy to his Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice hardware and Best Actress for Frances McDormand. McDormand makes history tonight as the only woman to win two Actress in a Leading Role SAG awards for film. Her previous win, for Fargo 20 years ago, was followed up by an Oscar win.
Like Rockwell and McDormand, the sweep continued for Gary Oldman, winning Male Actor in a Leading Role for Darkest Hour and Allison Janney winning Female Actor in a Supporting Role for I, Tonya. All four are now just a BAFTA win away from knocking on Oscar’s door and making history as the only group of four actors to win every televised precursors precursors (Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, SAG, BAFTA, Oscar) as a quartet in history.
The television prizes also followed suit with Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgård (Big Little Lies) repeating Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice wins. Claire Foy (The Crown) bested Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Veep took home its first Ensemble win for Comedy, beating out three-time winner Orange is the New Black.
Sterling K. Brown, just as he did at the Golden Globes, became the first African-American male to win in his category, Male Actor in a Drama Series. His show, This Is Us, also won Ensemble in a Drama Series.
