Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri came out on top as the Hollywood Foreign Press awarded the Fox Searchlight dark comedy its top awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Actress, Supporting Actress and Screenplay.
The show began with host Seth Meyers skewering Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and the sexual harassment allegations that have awakened Hollywood’s explosive action and navigated a complicated minefield of on-point jokes and gags from his late night show.
Multiple actresses invited activists members of the Time’s Up campaign as well as representatives for gender equality and parity, including Amy Poehler, Emma Stone, and Michelle Williams.
Oprah Winfrey, the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille award and the first black woman to receive it, gave a rip-roaring speech detailing her early life all the way to her current position in Hollywood and ended with a call: “I want all of the girls watching here now to know that a new day is on the horizon.”
The Shape of Water, which came in with the most nominations (7), ended up with two, Original Score and Best Director.
Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) bested competition as Winston Churchill with his first Golden Globe nomination.
Lady Bird was the champion on the Comedy/Musical side, winning Motion Picture and Best Actress (for Saoirse Ronan). Allison Janney represented the sole win for I, Tonya. The film’s inspiration, Tonya Harding was in attendance. Also in attendance was Tommy Wiseau, portrayed by James Franco in The Disaster Artist, who won Best Actor.
