The first batch of films set to show at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival is here and it’s huge. So many high profile Oscar hopefuls, galas and premieres and there are still so many more to come.
Many actors are going to be very busy at TIFF this year with multiple films showing. Rooney Mara has three major debuts: Lion, The Secret Scripture and Una. All three have awards potential for her with Lion (from Weinstein) looking like their biggest play this year. Isabelle Huppert has three films, including her Cannes sensation Elle. Amy Adams will see two major fall films, Arrival and Nocturnal Animals, hit TIFF.
Huge Sundance hits The Birth of a Nation and Manchester by the Sea will both be there but it’s likely only one (MbtS) will play Telluride. La La Land looks to hit the three majors post-Cannes: Venice, Telluride and now TIFF.
As is often the case, even when there are dozens of films to ignite our interest and gives us a lot to talk about re: their TIFF debuts as Oscar platforms, it’s the films that aren’t here that hold our attention. Now, this is just the first batch and films will be added in a successive number of press releases but that’s not always a good thing. Last year, additions like I Saw the Light, Our Brand is Truth and Truth, all of which were in the Oscar conversation but ended up being huge flops both in box office and for awards talk after Toronto.
This year though, we’re seeing films from A24 like Moonlight and 20th Century Women needing a strong platform for an awards play. They both have a good chance of showing up here later but it does make me a bit wary of their quality if they’ve been held back from the initial press release. Or maybe they’re just not ready yet. We’ll also be looking out for titles like Miss Sloane, Beat-up Little Seagull, Personal Shopper, The Girl in the Train, Wilson and How to Talk to Girls at Parties. Things that we definitely expect not to be here are a handful of unfinished Oscar films; Billy Lynn’s Longtime Walk, Fences, Hidden Figures and Silence.
TIFF 2016 runs from September 8th to 18th.
Here is a quick rundown of what defines a “premiere” at the Toronto International Film Festival. These distinctions also give us insight on the upcoming Venice and Telluride announcements.
World Premiere – just as it sounds, it’s the first showing of a film anywhere
North American premiere – previously shown at a festival outside NA (Cannes, Venice, etc), and not going to Telluride
Canadian Premiere – will have screened at a festival in North American, prior to TIFF — most likely Telluride, Sundance, Cannes, Venice, etc.
Toronto Premiere – the rare occasion when a film has already been screened in Canada, but not Toronto
Here are the first films announced for the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival
