Maren Ade’s Oscar-nominated Toni Erdmann led the 2017 International Cinephile Society (ICS) awards today with five wins; Picture, Director, Actor, Original Screenplay and Film Not in the English Language. Sandra Hüller was the runner-up in Actress and was the only category the film lost of its six nominations. This was the first time in the group’s 14 years that a woman has won the Director prize. Toni Erdmann is up for the Foreign Language Film Academy Award at next week’s Oscars.
Right behind Toni Erdmann, Elle was a winner or runner-up almost every step of the way. The film was 2nd place in Picture and Director but triumphed in Actress for Isabelle Huppert, Film Editing and Adapted Screenplay. Huppert is Oscar-nominated in Actress in a Leading Role at next week’s Academy Awards.
Moonlight saw wins in Supporting Actor for André Holland over Oscar-nominee Mahershala Ali, giving the film yet another critics’ win in this category (Trevante Rhodes has also gotten some love this season) and the film won the group’s Ensemble award. Moonlight has eight nominations at next week’s Oscars.
Elle and Moonlight had led the nominations going in, with eight apiece. Silence, which was also tied with eight nods, managed just a pair of runner-up mentions in Cinematography (where it’s also Oscar-nominated0 and Production Design. Julieta, which came in with seven, went home empty-handed. Lily Gladstone (Certain Women) took home the Supporting Actress prize.
