‘Top Gun: Maverick’ leads International Press Academy’s 27th Satellite Awards nominations

The International Press Academy (IPA) today announces its nominations for the 27th Satellite Awards in Motion Picture and Television where Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis and The Fabelmans led the field for film with 10 for the Tom Cruise starrer and 9 nominations apiece for the Baz Luhrmann and Steven Spielberg films, respectively. Top Gun: Maverick and The Fabelmans joined Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Living, TÁR, Till and Women Talking for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

The Banshees of Inisherin earned eight nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, where it joined Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, RRR and Triangle of Sadness. Glass Onion won the juried Ensemble Award for film, where Janelle Monáe was nominated in lead for her performances and not supporting where she has been campaigned.

The Satellite Awards wouldn’t be without some of their usual head scratching snubs and inclusions and this year is no different. Up for a Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama is Mark Wahlberg for Father Stu and A Love Song is up for Production Design despite nearly the entirely of the film taking place in and just outside of a trailer home.

Better Call Saul, Gaslit and Under the Banner of Heaven were among the nomination leaders for television where Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty won the juried Ensemble award.

The International Press Academy selects Satellite Awards nominees from domestic and international submissions for 36 categories: 23 Motion Picture and 13 Television. Nominations are derived from advance screenings at film festivals worldwide (i.e. BAFTA, Cannes, Sundance, Telluride, TIFF), as well as consideration screeners sent to individual journalists and/or sanctioned links as available by the deadline.

The Satellite Awards winners will be announced at the Satellite Awards presentation on February 11, 2023 in Los Angeles.
