Tracklist for ‘A Star Is Born’ reveals 17 original songs

The tracklist for one of the fall’s most anticipated films, the musical biodrama A Star Is Born, starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, is here and it reveals the pair perform 17 new, original songs, plus co-wrote and/or co-produced every song with Aaron Raitiere, Paul “DJWS” Blair, Lukas Nelson and a host of others. Lady Gaga has the lion’s share of songs, Cooper is listed with just five solo numbers. It makes sense as it’s a story of the fall of Cooper’s character as Gaga’s rises. Among the songs are two covers: “La Vie en Rose” performed by Lady Gaga and “Diggin’ My Own Grave,” performed by Cooper.  All songs were recorded live. 

While it’s not clear what song or songs Warner Bros will push for Original Song Oscar consideration, an early bet would be “Shallow,” which features heavily in the trailer (that “HAAAAAAAA AH AH AH AHHHHH” is already iconic) and possibly “I’ll Never Love Again” which is listed as having two versions, a film version and an extended version (possible single?). Another is “Why Did You Do That?” which lists Diane Warren as a co-writer. Warren and Gaga were co-nominated for their original song ‘Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground two years ago but shockingly lost to Sam Smith’s “Writing’s On the Wall” from the James Bond film Spectre. Warren has long been an Oscar bridesmaid, with 9 nominations and no wins so far.

A Star Is Born is set to rock the canals of Venice tomorrow but early word of mouth has been astonishingly good. It hits Toronto after that and then lands in theaters October 5th, the same day as the soundtrack is released on Interscope Records.
