Netflix today released the teaser for the much-anticipated feature directorial debut of Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, tick, tick…BOOM!, an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent

Larson began to perform the piece as a solo work in 1990. After his death, in 1996, it was revised and revamped by playwright David Auburn as a three-actor piece and was premiered Off-Broadway in 2001. Since then, the show has had an Off West End production, a West End production, an American national tour, two Off-Broadway revivals, in 2014 and 2016, and numerous local and international productions. Over the years, the musical’s lead role of Jonathan was performed by Raúl Esparza, Neil Patrick Harris and Lin-Manuel Miranda himself. Leslie Odom, Jr., Wilson Cruz, Amy Spanger and Molly Ringwald all played the musical’s other two roles. A new role has been created specifically for the film, Karessa, played by Vanessa Hudgens.

The film stars Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp as Susan, Tony Award nominee Robin de Jesús as Michael, Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry, Mj Rodriguez, Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford, The Roots’ Tariq Trotter, with Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens.

Andrew Garfield plays Jon, a young theater composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical.  Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan (Alexandra Shipp), who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael (Robin de Jesús), who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security; amidst an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?

tick, tick…BOOM! will be released in select theaters and on Netflix this fall, 25 years after the Broadway debut of Rent and Larson’s tragic passing. Here is the teaser trailer.
