A madcap father-daughter adventure comedy with Bill Murray and Rashida Jones directed by Oscar winner Sofia Coppola? Where do I sign up?
Bill Murray, who earned an Oscar nomination for Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, returns in On the Rocks, starring as the playboy father of Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation) to reconnect after her marriage looks like it might be hitting a snag.
Coppola told Entertainment Weekly “I wanted to do something that was a little bit lighter and more playful with a lot of heart and sincerity,” she said, noting that the central adventure — partially inspired by experiences with her own father, director Francis Ford Coppola — is more about bringing its participants closer together as a father and daughter than finding a resolution to the conflict that set their trek in motion. “Felix is an old-world gentleman used to talking over martinis. The way he looks at women and relationships, he’s giving advice from his perspective, which is different from how Laura’s husband is, and she’s trying to see it from his view. It’s [juxtaposing] that perspective of the martini generation and how they look at men and women in a different way than we do.”
Part Tootsie, part Thin Man, On the Rocks is a pseudo screwball, odd couple, buddy movie that Coppola draws on from her own life (much like Lost in Translation) after having the birth of her kids.
On the Rocks also stars Jenny Slate, Jessica Henwick, and Barbara Bain. It hits theaters this October from A24 and Apple Original Films.
