TV Recap: 'Watchmen' Season One Episode Nine – "See How They Fly"
My condolences to the inventor of twitter as it is the likelihood that by the time you’ve read this recap, Watchmen‘s season finale (yes, that’s how they worded it) has vaporized the internet. The last 2 minutes of this episode has all the potential of being debated in the same vein as The Sopranos finale. If you haven’t watched the finale yet, please bookmark this article and come back, but on the off chance you have then here we go with our top five takeaways from Episode Nine.
5. Sometimes you live long enough to be the hero
Adrian Veidt who by all accounts has been relegated to a pseudo villain, not only escapes his captivity on Europa, he manages to be the hero who saves his own offspring from becoming a god. No matter his intentions, even Veidt understands the danger of that type of power in the wrong hands.
4. Daddy Issues?
It appears that on the surface that her motivations stem from “daddy issues”. Lady Trieu wants to show her father (Veidt) that she is able to go from nothing to something. However, there’s more to this story than that. Really the whole series can be summed up with this line
“wounds won’t heal under a mask, wounds need time to breathe”
Whether it’s attempting to gain the love of a father who never acknowledged her, or heal from the pain caused by years of oppression, hiding behind a mask or atomic energy won’t resolve a thing. It would be cool to be Dr. Manhattan but even that comes with its own risks.
3. Laurie finds a way to bring justice to 3 million people
My favorite sequence of the episode is when Laurie brings Adrian in for the death of 3 million people (with the help of Looking Glass and a Wrench).
2. In the end, her ego is what brought forth death
Lady Trieu’s ego is what ultimately brought the death of Cyclops and her own demise. No one should have this type of power. Dr. Manhattan realized this and is ultimately the person who puts these events in motion knowing that it would end with him being vaporized
1. Well, What do you think happened?
I hope you were paying attention because if you were, then the final two minutes were something else. At this risk of ruining things, I’ll just ask this question … What do you think happened?
