The nominations for the 76th Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning by actors Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann and Christian Slate. They were joined by Golden Globe ambassador Isan Elba, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Meher Tatna and Dick Clark Productions executive VP of television Barry Adelman.
In the Motion Picture categories, Vice led the field with six nominations, including Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, Director and Screenplay (both Adam McKay) and three acting nods. The Favourite, Green Book and A Star Is Born were next with five nominations apiece.
Some shocking snubs occurred in Director and Score where If Beale Street Could Talk missed out, despite earning nominations in Motion Picture – Drama, Supporting Actress (double nominee today Regina King) and Screenplay. First Man also took a nosedive today, earning just a Score and Supporting Actress mention for Claire Foy.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama proved interesting, with two underdogs – Lucas Hedges in Boy Erased and John David Washington in BlacKkKlansman – earning nominations over critics’ favorite Ethan Hawke in First Reformed. Word has it the HFPA really disliked the film and that was evident today as it earned zero nominations.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama also came with some drama in the form of Rosamund Pike in steamrolling her way into the awards race after a very successful fall festival run with her film A Private War. The film also earned a Best Original Song nomination for Annie Lennox.
On the Television side, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story led the way with four, including three acting mentions. A handful of new shows earned three nominations including Sharp Objects, Homecoming and the final season of The Americans also came in with three nods.
The nominations come just a day after the surprise announcement of the show’s hosts – Golden Globe winners Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg. The 76th Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC in exactly one month, January 6, 2019 at 5pm PT/8pm ET.
