Visual Effects Society (VES) Nominations: ‘The Creator,’ ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Lead

The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced its nominations for 2023 film, television and other media where The Creator and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse led the feature film categories with seven nominations each and are also on the Oscar shortlist for visual effects. The Last of Us led television with six nods.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was next in features with six nods where it and The Creator are both nominated in the top category, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature alongside fellow Oscar shortlister Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Oppenheimer, which didn’t make the Academy cut. In the category of Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature we have two Oscar shortlist finalists, Napoleon and Society of the Snow. They are joined by John Wick: Chapter 4, Killers of the Flower Moon and Nyad. Godzilla Minus One earned one nomination, for the titular creature himself.

A few from the Oscar shortlist, Poor Things and Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, were snubbed entirely today.

“The artistry, ingenuity and passion of visual effects practitioners around the world have come together to create remarkable imagery,” VES chair Kim Davidson said. “We are seeing best-in-class work that elevates the art of storytelling and exemplifies the spirit of innovation. The VES Awards is the only venue that showcases and honors these outstanding artists across a wide range of disciplines, and we are extremely proud of our nominees.”

Other television nominees joining The Last of Us include The Crown, Loki, The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.

Winners will be announced and presented at the 22nd Annual VES Awards on February 21 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Here is the complete list of nominees.

This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
