The winners of the 19th Visual Effects Society awards were announced on Tuesday and The Midnight Sky took the top award of the night, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, over its Oscar competitor Tenet. The mostly virtual event was hosted by Patton Oswalt.

Project Power and The Witches had led the feature nominations with three each, the most for film in the motion picture categories, where Project Power won two. Soul made a clean sweep of all five of its animated film nominations, including Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature and Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature for the character of Terry.

The One and Only Ivan, Oscar-nominated for its visual effects, won its only nomination, Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature, for its titular character. Best Picture Oscar nominee Mank also won for its sole nomination here, Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature.

The Mandalorian grabbed the most nominations and dominated the broadcast field with 13 but earned several of those nominations in the same categories and ended up with three wins overall, including Outstanding Visual Effects in an Photoreal Episode and Outstanding Animated Character in an Episode or Real-Time Project. The Crown won for its supporting visual effects.

Sacha Baron Cohen presented the Creative Excellence Award to honoree Robert Legato, ASC, a three-time Oscar winner for Titanic, Hugo and The Jungle Book and a 7-time VES winner. Sir Peter Jackson (the Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong) was this year’s VES Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, and was paid tribute by Sir Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Naomi Watts, Elijah Wood, Jon Landau, James Cameron and Joe Letteri. LOTR star Cate Blanchett presented Jackson with the award.

The Visionary Awards was presented to Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012). The VES Award for Creative Excellence was given to Sheena Duggal (Venom, The Hunger Games), The Founders Award went to Ray Scalice (Looper, Raised by Wolves) with new VES Fellows this year going to Warren Franklin, David Johnson, Janet Muswell Hamilton, Ken Ralston and Sebastian Sylwan.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
