WGA Winners: Her and Captain Phillips Win as Hustle and Wolf Tumble

Spike Jonze’s Her beat out David O. Russell’s American Hustle for the Writers Guild’s highest honor for original screenplays and set itself up for a potential upset on Oscar night. Hustle was seen as the favorite here but its loss tonight and its no-show in the PGA tie is showing the film is a distant third in the Oscar race, being nominated for everything but a favorite at nearly nothing. Its Screen Actors Guild ensemble win now feels like a ‘this is what we think is winning Best Picture’ moment in time. Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell won for Documentaries.

On the adapted side, Billy Ray’s Captain Phillips was seen a big surprise in the face of The Wolf of Wall Street and Before Midnight. Oscar favorite 12 Years a Slave was not eligible here. Phillips isn’t seen a real contender for the Oscar in this category and in all likelihood 12 Years a Slave would have won had it been nominated.

Over in TV land, Breaking Bad and 30 Rock won episodic drama and comedy, respectively, while Breaking Bad and Veep won for Series and House of Cards was the victor in New Series.
