What Some of This Year’s Oscar Winners and Nominees Have Coming Up in 2018

Wondering what this year’s directing and acting Oscar winners and nominees are up to for 2018? Check out what’s up next for Guillermo del Toro, Gary Oldman, Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney and more, below.

BEST DIRECTOR

Guillermo del Toro (winner) – del Toro has no films set for release in 2018 but as a producer and writer has his hands in nearly a dozen projects in film and television that are either in pre-production or have just been announced including a Michael Mann documentary and a remake of the 1947 film Nightmare Alley for Fox Searchlight.

Jordan Peele – The Oscar-winning Peele (Original Screenplay) doesn’t have a feature follow-up to his directorial debut just yet but is said to be working on a sequel to Get Out. He will be returning to television to produce a Twilight Zone reboot for CBS All Access and HBO’s Lovecraft Country with J.J. Abrams.

Greta Gerwig – Gerwig wants to continue directing Sacramento stories with three more films about her hometown and California’s state capital. She will be heard in Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs from Fox Searchlight on March 28th and seen in Noah Baumbach’s next as-of-yet untitled feature from Netflix in November.

Paul Thomas Anderson – Anderson usually goes a few years (or more) between projects so nothing set for 2018 but it looks all but assured that he will be creating a film for Tiffany Haddish to star in.

Christopher Nolan – Nolan has no 2018 projects at this time or anything on the immediate horizon after that since he has turned down the next Bond film (which Danny Boyle will be directing).

 

BEST ACTOR

Gary Oldman (winner) – Oldman has two completed films without release dates so far; Mary with Emily Mortimer and Hunter Killer with Gerard Butler, Billy Bob Thornton, Willem Dafoe, and Common.

Timothée Chalamet – Chalemet could find a quick return to Oscar with his supporting role in true story Beautiful Boy (from Amazon) as a meth addict. He’ll also have the next Woody Allen film Rainy Day in New York (also from Amazon) but that film’s release remains to be seen.

Daniel Kaluuya – Kaluuya appeared in what is already one of the biggest blockbusters of all time, Black Panther, right as the Oscars were taking place. Later this year he’ll co-star in Steve McQueen’s Widows from 20th Century Fox (a remake of a 1983 UK miniseries) that could push him right back into the awards conversation.

Daniel Day-Lewis – Well, if you believe Day-Lewis statement from the end of last year he will not have any 2018 films…or any future films at all. The three-time Oscar winner is once again going into retirement but we don’t know if this one is permanent or not.

Denzel Washington – On tap for Washington is Sony’s The Equalizer 2, the sequel his 2014 hit.

 

BEST ACTRESS

Frances McDormand (winner) – McDormand will next be heard, but not seen, in Wes Anderson’s stop motion animated film Isle of Dogs from Fox Searchlight on March 28th.

Sally Hawkins – Hawkins currently has no projects set for a 2018 release. Her next feature is a sequel to 2014’s Godzilla remake.

Saoirse Ronan – At just 23, Ronan has secured three Oscar nominations and this year with Mary Queen of Scots from Focus Features (and set for November) she should be on her way to four. She also has The Seagull (from Sony Pictures Classics) and On Chesil Beach from Bleecker Street both coming in May.

Margot Robbie – Robbie isn’t letting her big break and first Oscar nomination settle. She’s got a packed schedule for 2018 (and 2019) that includes a voice performance in Peter Rabbit (which opened in February), the crime comedy Terminal with Simon Pegg and Mike Myers, Dreamland with Garrett Hedlund and Travis Fimmel and her next shot at an ‘afterglow’ Oscar nom – Mary Queen of Scots with Saoirse Ronan in November for Focus Features.

Meryl Streep – The most Oscar-nominated actor of all time won’t have any starring roles in film for 2018 but will show up for a pair of heavy-hitting sequels: Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again and Mary Poppins Returns. Streep’s big role this year will be joining the cast of HBO’s Big Little Lies for its second season.

 

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Sam Rockwell (winner) – Rockwell has a big slate of films this year (if they are all released in 2018) including A24’s Woman Walks Alone with Jessica Chastain (due June 29th), Ethan Hawke’s Blaze, Blue Iguana, The Best of Enemies with Taraji P. Henson and the very high-profile Backseat, the Dick Cheney biopic from Oscar winner Adam McKay (The Big Short) where Rockwell stars as George W. Bush opposite Oscar winner Christian Bale as Cheney and Oscar nominees Amy Adams and Steve Carell. That’s due in December from Annapurna.

Willem Dafoe – After becoming the critics’ favorite last season for The Florida Project, Dafoe not have to wait very long for another nomination. He returns in 2018 with At Eternity’s Gate, playing Vincent Van Gogh for Oscar-nominated director Julian Schnabel.

Richard Jenkins – There are no 2018 projects set for the two-time Oscar nominated Jenkins at this time.

Christopher Plummer – The 88-year old Oscar winner is showing no signs of slowing down and has no less than three projects set for release in 2018: the Ottoman Empire-era Cliffs of Freedom, the military film The Last Full Measure, which is chock full of Oscar winners and nominees including William Hurt, Ed Harris, Diane Ladd, Peter Fonda, Samuel L. Jackson and Amy Madigan and the Sony Pictures Classics dramedy Boundaries with Vera Farmiga and (again) Peter Fonda, which is due this June.

Woody Harrelson – After appearing in six feature films in 2017, Harrelson pares it down a bit but for two major releases: Solo: A Star Wars Story due in May and Marvel’s Venom with Tom Hardy in October.

 

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Allison Janney (winner) – Janney returns to her Emmy-winning CBS sitcom Mom but no films for 2018.

Laurie Metcalf – Metcalf will return to television this month to the reboot of the show that earned her two Emmy awards, Roseanne. She also has multiple TV projects on tap but no official feature films for 2018.

Octavia Spencer – The Oscar winner and three-time nominee will next be seen on the silver screen in A Kid Like Jake with Claire Danes and Jim Parsons and Luce with Naomi Watts and Tim Roth.

Lesley Manville – No major film projects for Manville as of yet but she returns to television in the UK comedy series Mum and the Hulu drama Harlots.

Mary J. Blige – Blige will next be heard in the animated film Sherlock Gnomes but has no other feature film projects lined up for 2018. She is currently filming the first season of the Netflix superhero series The Umbrella Academy.
