Writers Guild of America (WGA) Winners: ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and ‘The Imitation Game’ Win Top Awards

The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game have won the Writers Guild of America’s top honors, for Original and Adapted Screenplay, respectively. Each are favored to win in their corresponding Oscar categories next weekend even with Birdman being ineligible here against Budapest and The Imitation Game‘s main competitor, Whiplash, being put into Original here. Despite the WGA’s archaic rules and regulations for eligibility their track record for the Oscars is pretty good; 14 of the last 20 Adapted Screenplay winners went on to win the Oscar and 13 in Original.

On the television side True Detective won Drama Series and New Series after a string of losses that began at the Emmys and The Good Wife won Drama Episode for “The Last Call.” Louie won Comedy Series and Comedy Episode for “So Did the Fat Lady.”
