Youth, The Lobster and 45 Years Lead 2015 European Film Award Nominations

Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster lead the nominations for the European Film Awards today with 5 mentions including European Film, European Director and European Actor for Colin Farrell. The Cannes 2015 film has enjoyed quite a bit of critical success this week as it also did quite well with the BIFAs on Tuesday.

Another Cannes entry grabbed five nominations, Fox Searchlight‘s Youth. The film, which didn’t win anything at the Cannes Film Festival, has been sort of muted in terms of awards response recently but bounces back today with mentions in all of the top categories including Film, Director (Paolo Sorrentino), Actor (Michael Caine), Actress (Rachel Weisz) and Screenwriter (Sorrentino again).

Also in contention for the top prize are France’s Mustang, Iceland’s Rams (the country’s Oscar entry), Sweden’s A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (winner at Venice and the country’s Oscar entry) and Germany’s Victoria.

Speaking of Venice, winners there Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtney (45 Years) were also nominated here in Best European Actress and Actor, respectively.
