2016 Emmy Nominations: The Americans Gets Its Due, UnREAL is Real

68th-emmy-nominations-logo-large

The 2016 nominations for the 68th Emmy Awards are in and as usual not without some shocking mentions and even more shocking snubs. The Americans broke BIG this year (its 4th season) hitting Lead Actor (Matthew Rhys), Lead Actress (Keri Russell) and Drama Series. The show had languished with a writing nomination last year and a Guest Actress win for Margo Martindale but has always been one of television’s biggest critical hits. UnREAL, Lifetime’s show within a show hit grabbed a nomination for Constance Zimmer in Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and a surprise nod in Writing for its first season.

Game of Thrones absolutely decimated the nominations this year, especially in the acting categories where it adding Kit Harington to two-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage in Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and in Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Maisie Williams joins Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey.

As predicted, The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story performed very well in nearly all of its eligible categories including three in Supporting Actor – Sterling K. Brown, David Schwimmer and John Travolta. The FX mini also scooped up three Directing and three Writing nominations.

Despite Louis C.K.’s Horace and Pete getting almost completely snubbed, multi-Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf survived with a Guest Actress in a Drama Series nomination – one of three she earned today. She also was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Getting On) and Guest Actress in a Comedy Series (The Big Bang Theory).

The 68th Emmy Awards will be held on September 18th in Los Angeles and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

About Erik Anderson

Erik blames his mother for his love of all things Oscar, having watched them together since he opened his eyes. They also watched Miss Universe religiously every year (the pageantry!) and Erik came to the conclusion that the combination of these two things ultimately led him down the path to obsessing about awards and ACTRESSING. He began at GoldDerby, led by Tom O’Neill and then migrated over to Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), headed up by Sasha Stone before breaking off to create AwardsWatch. He is a member of the International Cinephile Society, GALECA (Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association), the International Press Academy and is the founder/editor of AwardsWatch.
