The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are just one week away and I’m getting very close to a final set of predictions. There really isn’t much happening between now and then in terms of guilds or new awards nominations and voting has been closed for four days now so it’s as good a time as any to unleash them. After all, we now have Golden Globe winners plus BAFTA, PGA and DGA nominations out.
There are still a lot of questions that only January 24th will answer. How solid are Fences and Hidden Figures? Will La La Land push to 14 nominations? Will the steak-eaters of the Academy jam Best Picture full of Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water and Sully over more diverse fare? And what about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emily Blunt? Is he a Golden Globe and BAFTA fluke or is one of the SAG five supporting actors in danger? Will her SAG and BAFTA nods knock out a major contender?
Here are my (alphabetical) predictions in all 24 categories as today, January 17th, 2017.
