Very little change in Best Supporting Actor this month; the top five remain the same but with some movement within that group. Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) nearly doubles his points to land in the #3 spot, bumping down Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) to #4. Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) also falls one, to #5. Liam Neeson (Silence) holds onto #1 yet again and even though #2’s Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) loses two points, so does Neeson so they’re still in lock-step with each other.

There is one newcomer to the list this month, Dev Patel in Lion. While he only has a single vote for now (from yours truly) it’s all is going to depend on category placement for Patel, which is on the cusp of lead and supporting. He could very well lose out just as he did with Slumdog Millionaire. Interestingly, it’s quite a similar situation in that part of the film his character is played by a child actor before Patel takes over.

Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences) loses another vote and is down to just one and Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins) falls off this month. Looking outside of the list to Other Contenders, there’s always Aaron Eckhart lurking for Sully or Bleed for This, any number of the supporting men in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk or Peter Sarsgaard could coast in on Natalie Portman’s coattails for Jackie.

Here are the 2017 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actor from The Gold Rush Gang for October:
