2018 Oscar Predictions: BEST ACTRESS (October) – Margot Robbie Skates Up the Chart
Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep may continue reign atop with The Post but Margot Robbie is coming in hot with I, Tonya this month. She triple axels all the way from #12 to the top 5 on the announcement that Neon will be making a full awards push for her and the film, which was the runner-up for the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. With a rich category full of Oscar winners and nominees, Robbie is the perfect ingenue newcomer that Best Actress loves.
Not to be underdone, Oscar winner Frances McDormand blows up the top 5 herself, vaulting all the way up to #2, just two points behind Streep. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won that lucrative People’s Choice Award and thats boosts the entire film across the board.
Robbie’s move bumps two-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) out of the top 5 as well as syphons off votes from Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Kate Winslet (Wonder Wheel), both of whom fall in position and points. Wonder Wheel is the closing night film at the New York Film Festival (October 15th) with a very buzzed about performance from the Oscar winner.
Oscar winners Emma Stone (Battle of the Sexes) and Judi Dench (Victoria and Abdul) hold onto their #6 and #7 spots but Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) is making a comeback after falling down to the Other Contenders list and is nipping at Dench’s heels.
The ladies from Sony Classics don’t fare too well this month with Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman) stagnant in points despite moving up one and Annette Bening (Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool), who was working on a fantastic overdue narrative at #6 last month falling to the bottom of the chart this month with little chance of holding on.
Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) pops up this month on the Other Contenders list on word that her role in the secretive Paul Thomas Anderson film is substantial enough to warrant a push here.
Those falling off completely include Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence in mother! The response to her incredibly divisive film might be just too divisive for the Academy. Claire Foy was announced this week as going supporting for Breathe and she finds herself out but I’m keeping her on the Other Contenders list just in case.
