Widows from Oscar winner Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) is the new top pick for Best Picture for April as Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, which was just announced to debut at the Cannes Film Festival next month, falls to #4.
Although BlacKkKlansman was expected to hit Cannes, now that it officially has been announced and that it has a release date of August 10th, I’m a bit less inclined to see it as a Best Picture winner with those two elements in place. The Cannes Film Festival, while still the most prestigious festival in the world, isn’t a big producer of Oscar Best Pictures the way that Telluride and Toronto are. The last BP winners to debut at Cannes were The Artist and No Country for Old Men. The August release, despite the intention to coincide with the Charlottesville protests one year ago, is also a bit of reason for pause. Focus Features also has some baity material in Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased with Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges and Josie Rourke’s Mary Queen of Scots with Best Actress nominees this year, Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. Those might be easier plays for the studio but they just two dual BP nominees this year, much to the surprise of many so they have a field of options to work with.
Recent test screenings for Widows and Adam McKay’s Untitled Dick Cheney biopic (although it seems it will officially just be called Cheney) were very good but I’m giving the edge to Widows with its November release date and stronger studio in 20th Century Fox. Annapurna Pictures is a great indie newcomer but they’ve got a pretty big slate of Oscar hopefuls this year that also includes Oscar winner Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight follow-up If Beale Street Could Talk and Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go Bernadette and that could spread Oscar campaigns pretty thin.
Word is strong on Oscar winner Damien Chazelle’s La La Land follow-up First Man. We should have a trailer on that soon but it sounds like it going to have big action set pieces and real human interest. Fox Searchlight has been dominated the Best Picture race this decade with three wins, including this year with The Shape of Water. That means keeping an eye out on Marielle Heller’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? and the upcoming The Favourite from Yorgos Lanthimos.
