2022 North Dakota Film Society (NDFS) winners: ‘Aftersun’ named Best Picture
Charlotte Wells’ debut feature Aftersun was named Best Picture at the 4th annual North Dakota Film Society Awards. Starring Paul Mescal and newcomer Frankie Corio, the film also received the award for Best Film Editing.
Babylon, from Damien Chazelle, earned the most wins of any film, with three: Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score. The Whale and Top Gun: Maverick were double winners, the former for Best Actor (Brendan Fraser) and Best Makeup and the latter for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio also won two: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, “Ciao Papa.”
Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Dolly De Leon (Triangle of Sadness) were the acting winners in supporting categories. Cate Blanchett was named Best Actress for TÁR.
The Best Picture win for Aftersun marks the third year in a row that a film by a female director won the top prize at the NDFS Awards.
The North Dakota Film Society is comprised of film journalists, educators, exhibitors, and filmmakers based in North Dakota.

Best Documentary Feature: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
Best International Feature: All Quiet on the Western Front
Best Cinematography: Claudio Miranda, Top Gun: Maverick
Best Film Editing: Blair McClendon, Aftersun
Best Production Design: Florencia Martin and Anthony Carlino, Babylon
Best Costume Design: Mary Zophres, Babylon
Best Makeup and Hairstyling: The Whale
Best Original Score: Justin Hurwitz, Babylon
Best Original Song: “Ciao Papa” from Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Best Sound: Top Gun: Maverick
