2027 Oscar Predictions: BEST ACTOR (June)

Like with Best Actress, the Cannes Best Actor winner doesn’t have a great history of Oscar correlation but it’s definitely better. Since 1990 there have been six actors who have turned their Cannes wins into Academy Award nominations: Gérard Depardieu for 1990’s Cyrano de Bergerac, nothing in the 00s then four in the 10s, Javier Bardem for 2010’s Biutiful, Jean Dujardin for 2011’s The Artist, Bruce Dern for 2013’s Nebraska and Antonio Banderas for 2019’s Pain and Glory. Finally, just this last season saw Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent. Only Dujardin manifested his into a win, and in the Best Picture winner, no less.
Also like Cannes Best Actress this year, the jury went for dual wins in Best Actor, choosing the romantic leads of Lukas Dhont’s World War I drama Coward, Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne. Unlike Efira and Okamoto, I think Macchia and Campagne will have a harder time with the Academy. While I feel comfortable it will represent Belgium for International Feature Film and be a likely nominee, will it have a place outside of that? Personally I hope so, I think it’s an incredible film. But again, as in Best Actress at the Oscars, you have to back even further for the last time two Best Actor contenders made the cut from the same film; F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce for 1984’s Amadeus. Abraham won, a part of the eight awards the film won, including Best Picture.
Cannes gave us quite a few good first looks at potential nominees, several of which I included in my pre-Cannes predictions. Sebastian Stan in in Fjord, the Palme d’Or winner, Spanish pop star Guitarricadelafuente (La bola negra) in his debut performance in the Best Director/s-winning film, Hanns Zischler (Fatherland), in the other Best Director-winning film, Adam Driver in Paper Tiger and Rami Malek in The Man I Love. Currently, only Malek’s film is without a distributor but I suspect it will have one by the time the New York Film Festival rolls around. But for now, he’s going to drop a bit in my rankings as a result and he switches places with Jaafar Jackson, as Michael gets close to clinching the all-time box office record for a biopic, currently held by Bohemian Rhapsody starring… Rami Malek.
