2017 Oscar Predictions: BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (October)
[divider style=”solid” top=”20″ bottom=”20″]
Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) and Naomie Harris (Moonlight) still hold onto the #1 and #3 spots but look at Nicole Kidman in Lion. Not only does she volley from #5 to #3 this month, she more than doubles her points. Her reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival, where the film debuted, were very good and her return to the Oscar race now seems imminent. This pushes down Kristen Stewart (Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk) considerably – she loses half of her point total but fear not, disciples of Kristenianity™, she remains securely in the top 5.
Greta Gerwig (20th Century Women) moves up and Amy Adams (Nocturnal Animals) moves down. It should be noted that these predictions came before the official announcement that Focus Features will be pushing Adams in Lead and not Supporting so she will not appear here next month. But hey, Adams’ loss could end up being Laura Linney’s gain; her 2-minute cameo in the film has earned huge buzz and if anyone knows about surprise Oscar nominations it’s Linney. Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures) joins the list for the first time.
Elsewhere you’ll see I’ve added Annette Bening (20th Century Women) and Viola Davis (Fences) to the Other Contenders list. Those pesky supporting rumors that are dogging Davis are now finding their way to Bening. Everything is unofficial at this point so until A24 and Paramount announce where these ladies will be submitted (the SAG submission deadline is in just over two weeks so we’ll know then) I’ll put them in both categories.
