‘Borat,’ ‘Judas and the Black Messiah,’ ‘Sound of Metal’ score Producers Guild nominations (PGA)
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Minari, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Promising Young Woman, Sound Of Metal and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are your 2021 Producers Guild of America nominees.
While most on this list were easy to predict, the inclusion of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm over News of the World definitely stumped most of us. The first film did not make the PGA cut but did earn an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. This season, the Borat sequel has heavily over-performed the first film both critically and in the industry, largely with its breakout star Maria Bakalova, who won the Critics Choice for Supporting Actress last night.
The producing team of Judas and the Black Messiah – Charles D. King, Ryan Coogler and Shaka King – mark the first time in PGA history that a film with all-Black producing team was nominated.
Netflix and Amazon took up six of the 10 spots, a show of streaming dominance in a year of little to no theatrical powerhouses from the major studios. One Netflix film that didn’t make the cut was Da 5 Bloods. Although it did very with Screen Actors Guild nominations, the film was snubbed entirely at the Golden Globes and needed a nomination here today to keep its head above water.
For the last two years, the PGA nominees have gone 100% with the eventual Oscar nominees for Best Picture, with the caveat that the PGA is a straight ten and AMPAS has a sliding scale. Here’s how the match-up looks since the expansion of both the PGA and Oscar.
