12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and Captain Phillips continued their domination of the guild awards nominations with nods from the American Cinema Editors guild today. They’re competing in the Dramatic category with Gravity and somewhat surprise nominees Her and Saving Mr. Banks. Rush was seen as a favorite here but missed out. It’s still a contender for an Oscar nomination though. In the Comedy or Musical category American Hustle competes with The Wolf of Wall Street and Nebraska. The group of ten nominees here almost always compiles the eventual Oscar top 5 and this year looks no different. While 12YAS, Captain Phillips, American Hustle and Gravity all seem like locks it’s that fifth nomination that looks to be up for grabs. Will it be 7-time nominee and 3-time winner Thelma Schoonmaker or Rush‘s Oscar-winning pair Daniel P. Hanley and Mike Hill? Or will Nebraska shock all and overperform?
The ACE/Eddie awards were established in 1962 and have a strong record in predicting Oscar nominees and winners. Since 2000, approximately 80 percent of the Oscar nominees for film editing have first received Eddie nominations, with all but two of the 14 winners taking home the ACE/Eddie before the Oscar (Traffic in 2001 and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2012). The winners will be revealed at the ACE/Eddies ceremony on Feb. 7 at the Beverly Hilton.
