Beyoncé rules night four of the NAACP Image Awards, Chloe x Halle win two

Music took center stage at night four of the 52nd NAACP Image Awards where Beyoncé dominated with four wins: Female Artist, Hip-Hop/Rap Song and Duo, Group or Collaboration for “Savage Remix” (with Megan Thee Stallion) and Music Video/Visual Album for “Brown Skin Girl,” for which she also won a Grammy last week with her daughter, Blue Ivy. This brings her NAACP win total up to 19, tying Whitney Houston for the all-time record. Beyoncé also became the most awarded female artist of all time at the Grammys this year, with 28 wins.

Doja Cat was named Outstanding New Artist (“Say So”) and Drake was named Outstanding Male Artist (“Laugh Now, Cry Later”). Outstanding Album went to Jhené Aiko for Chilombo and duo Chloe X Halle won two awards: Outstanding R&B Song for “Do It” and Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration (Traditional) for “Wonder What She Thinks of Me.”

Accepting their first award, Chloe Bailey said, “This right here is the award that matters. It is here where we stand in the light of an organization that has spent decades supporting people of color, and issues that we still to this day continue to fight.”

“We are so proud to accept this award, not just for ourselves but for those who worked tirelessly to make our journey a little bit easier,” Halle Bailey continued.

After the sister due won their second award, Halle Bailey added: “It’s our job as this generation to lift up and encourage each other to keep fighting and keep making our voices heard.”

Chloe Bailey thanked the fans “who made it possible for these two young women from Atlanta, Georgia to live a reality that for so long, only existed in our dreams and on our vision board,” pointing out the makeshift venue from which the ingenuitive sisters have been filming their award show performances during the pandemic.

“Thank you for rocking with us during every performance on that tennis court,” she said.

Academy Award nominee Jon Batiste also won two awards for Soul: Outstanding Jazz Album – Instrumental and Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation Album (which he shared with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross).

The NAACP also announced that LeBron James will receive the prestigious President’s Award during the televised ceremony on Saturday. He is also nominated for the org’s Social Justice Impact Award where he is nominated with White House correspondent April Ryan, legendary entertainer Debbie Allen, politician and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams and social justice activist Tamika Mallory.

Earlier in the day the NAACP announced that black-ish star Anthony Anderson will return to host the Image Awards main show on Saturday night, his eighth time. He first hosted the awards in 2014, and has hosted every year since. The 52nd NAACP Image Awards will be simulcast across all ViacomCBS Networks including BET, CBS and MTV on Saturday, March 27th at 8pm ET.
