Emmy Nominations: This Is Us, The Crown, Handsmaid’s Tale Score; Transparent and The Americans Snubbed in Series

Who said the Emmys are boring? This morning gave us plenty of jaw-dropping moments, the first of which was the glitch in the video announcement that left many without a live update of the nominations. Once those noms started rolling in we saw huge snubs in top categories; Transparent in Comedy Series, The Americans in Drama Series, Oprah Winfrey in TV Movie/Limited Series Actress to name a few.

Two shows the Emmys were clearly not ready to trash yet, despite viewers doing so; House of Cards and Modern Family. Both earned series nominations again over much more formidable competition.

Westworld, which some had pegged to not even get a Drama Series nomination proved them wrong by not only getting that but a field best 22 nominations in total. They were closely followed by Stranger Things with 18. The Crown and The Handmaid’s Tale both earned 13 nominations apiece. The big story though is This Is Us; it becomes the first network show to earn a Drama Series nomination since The Good Wife did six years ago. It earned 11 nominations overall, including two in Lead Actor and three in Guest Actor.

Big Little Lies grabbed 16 nominations in Limited Series. RuPaul’s Drag Race, which just finished its 9th season, earned its first nomination for Reality Competition Series today. Its host and creator, RuPaul Charles, won the Host category last year and is nominated again this year. The show’s spinoff, Untucked, also earned a nomination, in Unstructured Reality Series.

Saturday Night Live scored big with 22 nominations, including three in Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series; Vanessa Bayer and Leslie Jones earn their first and last year’s winner Kate McKinnon joins them. Last season was Bayer’s final season.

The Emmys, hosted by Stephen Colbert, will air live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. PT. on CBS.
