On the Shelf: ‘Hoppers,’ ‘The Boys in the Band,’ ‘The Flintstones,’ ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,’ ‘Charade,’ ‘Five Easy Pieces’ Highlight the 4K Physical Media releases for the Week of June 1

First week of June brings together things for all ages on the physical media front, as two-family films from different eras are released alongside action packed tale of Robin Hood, a classic, vital queer culture staple, and two upgrades from Criterion of their very best films all land their place within a collectors 4K Blu-ray collection. First up is the latest film from Pixar, Hoppers, which is about when scientists discover a way to transform human consciousness into robotic animals, Mabel (Piper Curda) uses the new technology to uncover the mysteries of the animal world that are beyond anything she could have ever imagined. Hailed as one of best Pixar films in recent memory, our review from Jay Ledbetter stated that Hoppers “transcends its lack of plot simplicity and specific world rules by latching on to a classically absurd form of storytelling,” and once you get over the story device within the film, “you won’t stop wrapping your arms around everything else about the movie,” as Hoppers is an absolute delight. Alongside this release is the other family film of the week, the live action, 1994 version of The Flintstones, which follows John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rick Moranis, Rosie O’Donnell taking on the classic cartoon characters in one of the best nostalgic, IP family films of the 1990s. Something old and something new for families to enjoy this week on 4K.
As Pride Month kicks off today, the fine people over at Cinématographe have released an iconic piece of gay culture on 4K with William Friedkin’s The Boys in the Band. Based on Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking, Off-Broadway play, the film follows a witty, perceptive and devastating look at the personal agendas and suppressed revelations swirling among a group of gay men in Manhattan in the 1970s. In a stunning ensemble piece, the film picks it’s subjects apart, examining their deepest insecurities, and leaving the audience in as much of a mess as the characters are by the end. Controversial upon release, The Boys in the Band is a messy yet important look at a time in gay history, unafraid of cutting to the core of those on-screen to showcase their truth. It’s a must own this week given not only the time of the release and the subject matter, but also the breakthrough film for one of the most important directors of the 1970s in Friedkin. Once you’ve seen the film, you can listen to our episode on The Boys in the Band via the Director Watch podcast.
Next up is the latest release from our friends at Arrow Video, who have updated the 1991 action packed version of the classic tale of Robin Hood, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. In this version starring Kevin Costner, crusader Robin of Locksley breaks out of a Jerusalem prison with the help of fellow prisoner Azeem (Morgan Freeman), a Moor, and travels back home to England. Upon arrival, Robin discovers his father dead in the ruins of his family estate, killed by the vicious sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). Robin and Azeem join forces with outlaws to save the kingdom from the sheriff’s villainy. Directed by Kevin Reynolds (Red Dawn, Fandango, Waterworld), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is an spectacle of its time, one that delivers the goods on this upgrade, with special features that includes, a multi-part documentary featuring interviews featuring the cast and crew, audio commentary with Reynolds and actors Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, and Christian Slater, Robin Hood: The Myth, the Man, the Movie, an archival 1991 documentary hosted by Pierce Brosnan, and Bryan Adams “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” performance at Slane Castle, Ireland. Do everything you can do to grab this one on 4K this week.
And finally, our friends over at the Criterion Collection have provided 4K upgrades to their two classics Charade and Five Easy Pieces to add to every collector’s shelf. In Charade, a trio of crooks relentlessly pursue a young American, played by Audrey Hepburn in gorgeous Givenchy, through Paris in an attempt to recover the fortune her dead husband stole from them. The only person she can trust is Cary Grant’s suave, mysterious stranger. Director Stanley Donen goes deliciously dark for Charade, a glittering emblem of 1960s style and macabre wit. For Five Easy Pieces, Jack Nicholson followed up his breakout role in Easy Rider with a powerful leading role in this searing character study. Nicholson plays the iconic cad Bobby Dupea, a shiftless thirtysomething oil rigger and former piano prodigy immune to any sense of responsibility, who returns to his upper-middle-class childhood home, blue-collar girlfriend (Karen Black, in an Oscar-nominated role) in tow, to see his estranged, ailing father. Moving in its simplicity and gritty in its textures, Five Easy Pieces is a lasting example of early-1970s American alienation. Both films, gorgeous in their upgraded 4K restorations, are must-owns for anyone who loves these films, the time period the were made in, or just a Criterion collector.
