Sometimes a film comes along that you’re not expecting; that swoops you up, carries you emotionally and takes you on a journey you didn’t even know you needed to go on.

The very long awaited and anticipated first trailer for A24‘s Moonlight from writer/director Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy) is here and it looks like it could very well be that film. In only his second film, Jenkins looks to be showing himself to be one of the most important film makers working today. Pushing social issues envelopes and doing it so evocatively and seductively.

Produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B (Oscar winners for 12 Years a Slave), distributed by A24 (last season’s Best Actress winner Brie Larson – Room and Visual Effects winner Ex Machina) and starring Naomie Harris (Skyfall), André Holland (The Knick), Janelle Monaé (Hidden Figures) and Emmy-nominee Mahershala Ali (House of CardsMoonlight combines elements of Boyhood, Beasts of the Southern Wild and the documentary On the Downlow to give us a truly new vision of cinema.

From A24:

[box type=”shadow” align=”aligncenter” class=”” width=””]Moonlight is the tender, heartbreaking story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality. Anchored by astonishing performances and the singular vision of filmmaker Barry Jenkins, Moonlight is a groundbreaking exploration of male masculinity—a sensual, intoxicating piece of cinema that uncovers deep truths about the moments that define us, the people who shape us most, and the ache of love that can last a lifetime.[/box]

Moonlight will be hitting the Toronto International Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival ahead of its October 21st bow in theaters and is set to turn Oscar season on its head.
