Gold Rush Gang 2016 Oscar Predictions: BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (August)
Robert De Niro (Joy) sees his lead increase, putting his vote total to a near perfect score and maintaining his #1 status. His strength in this race has been one of the most consistent in the early season. His Oscar comeback in Silver Linings Playbook (also from #1 director David O. Russell) could have put him on track for a 3rd win right here. Beasts of No Nation continues to increase month to month and this is true for Idris Elba. As I predicted last month, Elba blows up the chart to #2. Hardy is still in a good position at #3 and well ahead of his nearest competitor, Harvey Keitel in Youth, who actually gains a point from last month.
Samuel L. Jackson (The Hateful Eight), once a top 3 player, drops to 5th place and loses quite quite a few points in the process. As more contenders emerge, they siphon those votes away and this is definitely the case for him and even more so for Benicio del Toro, who goes from 4th to 9th in one month. Reviews for Sicario remain strong and he could bounce back once the film is released next month.
Robert Redford (Truth) moves up the chart to #6 on the strength of being Sony Pictures Classics‘ only supporting actor push and with the announcement of Our Brand Is Crisis getting an October awards release, newcomer Joaquim de Almeida debuts (also at #6) satisfies the WB supporting actor slot. For those unfamiliar with that statistic, former Gold Rush Gang member Dennis Kelly crafted a great piece on how Warner Brothers has been quite agile at getting a supporting actor in at the Oscars year after year. Sometimes he’s the studio’s sole acting nomination (like Alan Arkin in 2012’s Best Picture winner Argo) or sometimes a big surprise (like Max von Sydow in 2011’s Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close). Very early in the season we thought it might be Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton who would make it in (and he still could) but it’s de Almeida that has the biggest part so for now we’re going with him.
