Adapted Screenplay might be one of the most ‘locked’ categories come Oscar night and when (if) James Ivory wins for Call Me By Your Name he will become the oldest Oscar winner ever at 89. Ivory, of the famous Merchant-Ivory period films of the 80s and 90s, should easily earn his first Oscar here, his first nomination for writing (he has three for directing). The 1980s set summer romance has been the critics’ favorite in this category with 11 prizes. It’s also the only Best Picture nominee in the bunch. Everyone else will just have to be happy to have been nominated.
It’s not likely that WGA, BAFTA or the USC scripter will divert from Call Me By Your Name but if any of them do it will be worth keeping an eye on.
