Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri) maintains a solidly perfect score at #1 while critics’ favorite Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project) is #2 across the board. Something drastic would need to happen to change those up and it’s not impossible. The backlash against Three Billboards and its depiction of racism, while featuring very little attention to its meager black characters, has been a focal point of the backlash along with Rockwell’s character’s perceived redemption. If that backlash continues to grow it could be Rockwell who finds himself on the outs since its his character that represents so much of the controversy.
If that is the case then the door opens for Dafoe despite his being his film’s sole nomination. Of note: Dafoe could become the first person to win NBR/LAFCA/NYFCC/NSFC and then lose the Oscar since Michelle Pfeiffer for 1989’s The Fabulous Baker Boys.
There isn’t much of a case for Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World) or Woody Harrelson (Rockwell’s 3B co-star).
