2018 Oscar Predictions: SUPPORTING ACTOR (December Part 2) – Dafoe Still #1 but Plummer Makes His Move
Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), who’s won over a dozen critics’ awards this season (15, as of this writing) remains the leader, increasing his point level back up to 99 (only Jason has him at #2). Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) has been earning lots of regional critics’ prizes (he’s at 8 there) and is still a solid 2nd place.
The big move up the chart is Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water). He moves from #6 to #3 on the strength of his Golden Globe and SAG nominations. Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg (both from Call Me By Your Name) hold on to Top 5 status but nipping at Stuhlbarg’s heels is Rockwell’s co-star Woody Harrleson. Harrelson received a SAG nomination alongside Rockwell (where neither Hammer nor Stuhlbarg did) and with that we get closer to having dual supporting actors nominated in the same year at the Oscars for the first time since 1992. Harrelson moves up to #6 from #10.
Mark Rylance (Dunkirk) falls out of the top five and Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World) makes a serious play for a nomination here after his Golden Globe mention. Since his film was only screened for the Hollywood Foreign Press he wasn’t able to earn SAG or Critics’ Choice nominations but now that the film has been seen and Plummer is all over it (with just nine days of shooting and as many days of post-production) this may be the easiest and best way for the Academy to recognize the efforts and ability of director Ridley Scott (if they don’t give him a Best Director nomination, that is).
Steve Carell (Battle of the Sexes) returns to the chart with SAG and Golden Globe nominations (the former in supporting, the latter in lead).
