Andrew Garfield Trips Out in Surreal Neo-Noir ‘Under the Silver Lake’
Under the Silver Lake is the anticipated follow-up from It Follows director David Robert Mitchell finds loopy slacker Andrew Garfield embarking on a surrealist adventure after he discovers a mysterious woman (American Honey‘s Riley Keough) in his apartment’s swimming pool.
The trailer is a mystery-comedy detective thriller about Los Angeles and its denizens—dog killers, aspiring actors, glitter-pop groups, nightlife personalities, It girls, memorabilia hoarders, masked seductresses, homeless gurus, reclusive songwriters, sex workers, wealthy socialites, topless neighbors, and the shadowy billionaires floating above (and underneath) the City of Angels.
The film looks prime for a slot at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (I’m thinking Midnight) and this spiritual cousin to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice is just the counterculture fever dream the summer ordered.
A24 will release Under the Silver Lake in select theaters on June 22.
