Frontrunner Friday 2024 Oscar Predictions: A Busy Awards Weekend Awaits

Last Tuesday, while the likes of Christopher Nolan, Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper roamed about the Oscars Luncheon, the afternoon made superstars out of Messi, the dog who plays Snoop in Anatomy of a Fall, and the high-spirited grandmothers from the nominated documentary short Nai Nai & Wài Pó. The weeks just before Oscar voting kicks off are prime time for nominees to co-mingle in a way they haven’t before and might not again until it’s time to pull the lever on your Academy ballot and these face to faces are what have pivoted Oscar races in the past.

Since last week’s edition of Frontrunner Friday we had the DGA Awards, which of course went to Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer and where Celine Song picked up the first time director prize. The Art Directors Guild and the Set Decorators Society of America bestowed awards on Barbie, Poor Things and Oppenheimer, making that category even more confusing. Then the Society of Composers and Lyricists went with another Oppenheimer frontrunner, in original score, as well as another original song win for Billie Eilish and Finneas for “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie.

But all eyes will be on BAFTA this weekend. Whether they give some races more shape or offer multiple forks in the road to others, Oppenheimer should be able to prevail with a record or near-record number of wins. At the moment I’m predicting nine wins, which would tie it with 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for the most of all time. The Annie Awards and Makeup and Hairstyling Guild Awards are also this weekend so fire up the popcorn and break out your Dune bucket, the show is about to start.

Here are my Frontrunner Friday Oscar Predictions for the 2024 Academy Awards on Friday, February 16.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
