  1. I think you are on the wrong track with Hardy’s performance, Erik. I heard just about everything he said. It helps if you remember Tom Berenger’s performance in Platoon, for starters, as Hardy took that as his starting point. He does bring shadings to the character if you pay close attention. I realize you don’t like the actor but he does a great job with a wretched character and gives him shadings that are both good and bad (primarily bad). He’s a little like Fred C. Dobbs (Bogart’s character in Treasure of the Sierra Madre), in that he’s in it for himself but still occasionally feels a bit of guilt. He does try to protect Poulter’s character. His philosophy is himself first, then maybe anyone else, especially if they might benefit him in some way or other. I saw this film twice and may go again. It’s quite stunning and bleak, but it gets under your skin.
