Gold Rush Gang 2016 Oscar Predictions: BEST PICTURE
June is here and with it comes a new batch of Best Picture Oscar predictions from your tried and trusted Gold Rush Gang. While the top four is the same as last month there is a strong newcomer in the race with Suffragette from Focus Features. It moves up one spot to #5 and surprisingly it’s The Revenant (20th Century Fox) that gets bumped out of the top 5, landing at #6. There is definitely concern that the film will be a major Best Picture performer amongst the Gold Rush Gang, especially in light of the history of Best Picture/Director winners being able to follow up with their very next film.

Joy (20th Century Fox) and Bridge of Spies (Dreamworks) keep their holds on the #1 and #2 spots, respectively. In the case of Joy, the film increases on its lead by another five points. With three 1st place votes Joy is mopping up the competition. I can’t promise that won’t be the last time I use that pun this Oscar season, but I’ll try.
The Danish Girl (Focus Features) also maintains its comfortable position within the top 5 and actually moves up to tie for the #3 spot. But take a look at that top five and you’ll see something really interesting and rather hopeful. Three of the films are with female leads and are female-centric stories (Joy, Suffragette, Carol) and one is also female-centric in that it’s true a story of a man’s transition from male to female (The Danish Girl). We’ll see if the Academy sees this as their top five but for now, it looks solid from our standpoint.
Elsewhere on the list, the films that played at the Cannes Film Festival last month benefited on our most current polls. Youth found the biggest jump, moving up seven spots to #8. The film has made strides in other categories as well, most notably in Best Director (Paolo Sorrentino) and Best Actor (Michael Caine). While The Hateful Eight didn’t see a move in its placement, it’s numbers did drop from last month and put in decidedly in the lower ranks of the list.
