50 films have been selected for consideration at the 29th European Film Awards, including Oscar winner Room (representing Ireland and starring Best Actress Brie Larson) and 2016 Cannes Palme D’or winner I, Daniel Blake from Ken Loach and Graduation, from Best Director winner Cristian Mungiu. A handful of other Cannes entries made the list, including Sieranevada from Cristi Puiu, Toni Erdmann from Maren Ade (which is also on Germany’s shortlist for the Foreign Language Film Oscar), Julieta from Pedro Almodovar, Elle from Paul Verhoeven and The Unknown Girl from The Dardenne Brothers.
Many films listed are the official submissions and shortlists for the Foreign Language Film Oscar at next year’s Academy Awards. They include: The Commune and Land of Mine (on Denmark’s shortlist); Julieta and The Olive (on Spain’s shortlist) and Israel’s Beyond the Mountains and Hills. The previously mentioned Sieranevada is the official submission from Romania.
Florence Foster Jenkins, starring Meryl Streep and directed by Stephen Frears made the list, as did Suffragette, starring Carey Mulligan (and again, Meryl Streep – in a cameo). Isabelle Huppert sees double vision again as she has two films in consideration – her Cannes entry Elle and the Berlinale-winning Things to Come.
THE 29TH EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS will be held on December 10th, 2016 in Wroclaw/Poland. Here is the full list of films under consideration:
